Training ... an overview

What is the current scenario of training?

Many Malaysian companies have some kind of pathetic view on training. We think training as some kind of a ‘quick-fix’. Training always comes second even though the government has heavily subsidized this initiative. People tend to take it lightly and care a lot more on the cost of the training rather on how it affects their work requirements.

As a result, we can see some kind of unhealthy trend in our market. Training providers have resolved to give ‘cheap’ programs in order to meet customer’s requirement. This ‘supply-demand’ scenario has led to low standard of training and training industries have been perceived as ‘saliva/selling medicine’ business.

Why do these kinds of situations occur?

First and foremost, this happened due to a low level of awareness on training itself. Most people who are in charge of training especially the leaders in a particular organization are not aware on what it takes to identify, plan, execute and review training. As a result, many of us who implement training programs just do this for the sake of training and normally end up feeling tired, unconvinced towards the training program and think that these trainings are a waste of money.



But what is training?

The term training in Wikipedia refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. In other words we provide training to help the people to have competencies to perform their duties/goals/Key Performance Indicators or as preparation for them to take higher responsibilities.

Move forward?

We need to address the basic understanding of training. Such training needs proper planning, implementation and review. Training needs systematic and continuous approach. Training without proper follow-ups is simply a waste of money, energy and time. Training is like a ‘marathon’ NOT ‘100 meter dash’. Training is ‘investment’ NOT ‘expenditure’. Leaders need to be able to see training for staffs as tools to achieve their goals. Leaders must be able to see the direct linkages between training and higher initiatives. In other words they must be able to have helicopter view on all these initiatives.

Last but not least, training must be look from 3 perspectives – core, non-core and foundation. Many organizations are familiar with core and non-core but NOT foundation. If you are really serious about developing balanced training programs, you must not ignore the foundation programs. If you have difficulty in this area, try 3K because 3K program is all about foundation. Your staffs will greatly benefit from such program. This, I can ensure you.
